Netflix clocked close to 42 billion API requests per day in January, according to the company’s director of engineering Daniel Jacobson, who revealed the number as part of a presentation he recently gave to the Paypal engineering team. In his slides, Jacobson pointed out that the number of API requests has grown 70-fold in just two years, from 600 million in January of 2010 to 41.7 billion in January of 2012.

Providing an API that is resilient enough to handle these kinds of demands is not a small feat, and Jacobson’s slides reveal some of the principles behind the architecture used for the task. However, there’s an even bigger story to this: The sole reason that Netflix’s API has gotten so popular in the last two years is that the company’s service is seeing huge amounts of traffic from connected devices.
Netflix originally built its API with third-party developers in mind, which used it to build websites and apps to manage one’s DVD queue and similar things. However, the Netflix engineering team eventually realized that it could use the very same API to bring Netflix to devices like the Roku, the PS3 and the Xbox. DOHA A GLOOM that had descended when local high jump hope Mutaz Essa Barshim pulled out of the Samsung Diamond League opener was lit up by a Qatari teenager Hamza Driouch in the 1,500 metres.
At the Qatar Sports Club Stadium on Friday, the 17-yearold Driouch, who has also qualified for the London Olympic Games, produced a sparkling performance to set the world best time in youth category.
Driouch finished in 3 minutes and 33:69 seconds to get the ninth place in the race, won by Silas Kiplagat edging his Kenyan compatriot Asbel Kiprop, the world and Olympic champion.
Driouch also has the world’s best performance in 1000 metres to his name. He had done this in the Youth Olympics Games held at Singapore in 2010.
During the press conference, a humble Driouch was overwhelmed by flashes of the shutterbugs and questions of the journalists. His coach, Jama Aden, who is also Qatar’s national coach for middle distances, controlled the situation and said that his charge would be more confident next time. “He speaks and understands English but he is shy right now. Next time when he will be in front of you, he will be experienced,” said his coach Jama.
Driouch, pointed out that he was happy with his performance and lauded his coach for his new achievement. “I am very happy with what I have done. My timing is the fastest in my age group and it’s something which I will always be proud of,” said the youngster.
“I would also like to thank my coach who prepared me for the event and helped me to reach this level,” added Driouch.
His Aden coach also revealed that he has trained Driouch since he was a kid and wishes him to progress in the event. “I have Hamza since he was a kid and I have seen him grow. I also know how dedicated he is and how passionate he is about the sport. I want to see him achieve more,” said Jama.
Before heading off to the Olympics, Driouch will be participating in the World Junior Championship in Barcelona and fifth leg of Samsung Diamond League in Oslo. “His target is 3:40 and I hope that he will achieve that too,” mentioned Jama.
Another local athlete that showed flashes of his talent was Mousaab Abdelrahman Bala, the Arab Games 800 metres gold medallist. The young and inexperienced lad ran the first 200m at a blistering speed before race winner David Rudisha and his pace maker caught him.
As the favourite Rudisha stepped up the pace, Bala also tried his best to hold his third place. But in the final 70-80 metres, he got exhausted and faded into the ninth place. He however managed to clock 1:45.19, his career best time.
“I had a good race. I think I pushed hard in the first part of the race. I will stick to my training plan until the Olympics and I hope something good over there,” added Bala.

The interconnection of all optical atomic clocks in Europe will be a reality in the coming years, thanks to a breakthrough achieved by Physikalisch-TechnischeBundesanstalt specialists (PTB) and the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ) in Germany. Engineers and researchers were able to transfer high optical frequency stability using a conventional optical fiber network. Optical atomic clocks measure time with unprecedented precision. However, the ability to compare the clocks to each other making them applicable for complex testing on critical theory, in multiple areas ranging from cosmology to quantum physics. Comparison of the optical frequency of these clocks has proved a challenge, since the few existing optical clocks around the world are not exactly portable, due to its complex nature. Through a network of fiber optic telecommunications standard, experts have managed to transfer optical frequency stability. The findings of the group of engineers and scientists of the PTB and the MPQ have been disseminated through a paper published in the specializing Science, which is entitled “A 920-Kilometer Fiber Optical Link for Frequency Metrology at the 19th Decimal Place.” Meanwhile, the Physikalisch-TechnischeBundesanstalt (PTB) and the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ) have published two press releases about it. The optical fiber connecting the two institutes is installed underground along 920 kilometers. This shows that it is possible to compare optical clocks located at great distances, and transmit information in a stable manner to laboratories located in other parts of the continent, where signals can be used for high precision experiments. At first, basic research would benefit from this new technology, such as in the accurate determination of natural constants, tests of validity of the Theory of General Relativity Einstein or predictions of quantum electrodynamics. In a second step, the process could have broad applications in the field of industry. Optical atomic clocks use a frequency 100,000 times higher compared to microwave clocks used at present, and thus can measure the time intervals much more precise. Logically, this condition becomes a much more useful in the field of scientific research and technology. Consequently, experts wondered what would be the way to transfer the optical frequencies over long distances more efficiently. The proven techniques with the help of satellites to achieve sufficient stability of microwave signals, but are insufficient to exploit the full potential of optical atomic clocks. Faced with this problem, in recent years researchers MPQ and PTB have investigated the mode of transmitting optical frequencies through optical fibers. Were supported by the Cluster of Excellence QUEST of the Leibniz Universität Hannover, by the European Space Agency (ESA), the Deutsches Forschungsnetzwerk (DFN) and the German consortium Gasline. Optical fiber networks are commonly used in telecommunications, but to be applied in this context is required the incorporation of novel optical amplifiers, which have been developed and installed along the entire path of the network created. Another problem to overcome was the mechanical disturbance, or thermal noise originating from temperature fluctuations, traffic and other factors. The new techniques applied to detect and compensate for these disturbances, thereby increasing the effectiveness of the solution. Thanks to these advances, the optical frequencies can now be transmitted with a quality that was only available until such time metrology institutes. Also, the use of fiber optic infrastructure that national research networks already available in Europe, will in the future interconnection of optical atomic clocks around the continent. Usain Bolt won the 100 meters in 9.82 seconds in the Jamaica International Invitational on Saturday night, a month before the sprinting powerhouse’s Olympic trials.
The crowd cheered wildly when Bolt won in his first 100 of the year, giving him a standing ovation after the race that had two false starts. The time was the fastest in the world this year.
“It’s always a joy,” Bolt said. “I was very happy to come here and see all the people who came out.”
The crowd included Jamaica’s prime minister, Portia Simpson-Miller.
Even before the race, the confident Bolt got the hometown crowd going with a quick “To Di World” pose, in which he points to the sky as if he’s about to shoot an arrow into the sky.
In the Beijing Olympics four years ago, Bolt won gold medals and set world records in the 100 and 200 and helped Jamaica win and set a world record in 400 relay.
Jamaica’s Michael Frater was second in 10.00.
